Websites for the small business

Your a small business - maybe its a one person business. However, you need or have a desire to get an online presence. But you don't have the skills or the desire to pick them up. The truth is, most people if they wanted to, can create a website - believe me, it is not that hard a task. Given this scenario, it is understandable why many small business owners don't create a website. Some of the reasons for this are:-
  • The owner is totally focused on his business, with little or no interest in creating Websites
  • No time to invest in the learning curve that will be required to create a website. This time could be spent more fruitfully acquiring new customers.
The other scenario is that you have a website but not much traffic - there's no point in having a website if nobody is visiting it. It's a bit like having a shop and the window display is shabby and worst of all - the windows haven't been cleaned in months!

So what is the problem? As you might have guessed, there is no simple answer - but some factors that can have an impact on your Website are:-
  • The content is not appealing or interesting to your potential customer
  • Does the content change regularly to keep the website fresh
  • Is your website simply doing a hard sell
  • The design / layout is boring and puts clients off
  • Navigational features are not well designed
  • Doesn't work very well with different browsers
  • Presentation is dull
  • Organisation who created your website has no interest n your business. What I mean by this is there is no passion for your product or service
  • Oh yes - what about disabled users? Do you look after them? Are they able to access your website?
Off course there are a multitude of other factors that could be addressed, but this article is only a brief overview of some the issues with Website Design.

So I've rattled of the potential issues or problems a website can have. What can you do about it? Well the first thing you can do is try and have an objective review of your website. Secondly try and get some of your family and friends to have a look at your website and get a truthful opinion about your website from them. Off course all of this takes effort and let's face it, the best to write about your business is YOU.

However, there are other options available if you don't have the time or the inclination to do this - Use a third party. However finding a suitable Web Designer is easy, but finding the right one that will work with you is not easy. Usually word of mouth is a good start or looking at reference sites is another good pointer. But the important point to take from this article is that if you have an Online presence or your thinking of going online - then, there are techniques that are available to improve your traffic.
